I read about thick and thin baby wraps, but what do they mean with that?

The thickness of baby wraps is indicated in grams per m2 (gr/m2). Wraps that have a high amount of gr/m2  are called thick baby wraps and wraps with a low amount of gr/m2 are called thin baby wraps. But actually the gr/m2 say more about the weight of the wrap.

What determines the thickness of a wrap?

The thickness of a baby wraps is determined by the amount of yarns that is used per m2, the material of the yarn and the thickness of the yarn. That means that not every 100% cotton wrap is exact the same weight. For example We are Wovens and Storchenwiege both use 100% cotton for their wraps but the We are Woven wraps are much thicker.

As i already said, not only the thickness of the yarn determines the weight of the wrap, also the material. Wool is a heavier material than bamboo. So a woolen wrap will probably have a heavier weight per gr/m2.

Thin – Medium Thick – Thick

All -220 gr/m2 woven wraps are called thin, these baby wraps are perfect for newborn baby wearing.

Medium thick woven wraps (220- 280 gr/m2 )are suitable for newborns, babies and toddlers. The baby wraps from Little Frog, Storchenwiege, Babylonia and the We are Wovens Fling are examples of medium thick wraps.

Woven wraps with a gr/m2 over 280 are called thick wraps. These are perfect for toddlers and pre-schoolers, but can also be used directly from birth. The We are Wovens Mixite and some of the Little Frog wraps have a 300+ gr/m2.

Which wrap should i choose?

A thin woven wrap is very suitable for carrying a newborn, but when your child gets bigger it will be a bit less comfortable.

In my opinion the medium thick wraps are the best to start with, if you carry a newborn or a baby. These are alround, strong and comfortable even when your child grow bigger. (All our wraps in the webshop are medium to thick wraps).

When you want to buy a wrap to carry a bigger baby or a toddler i would definitely choose the thicker wraps. These are stronger and more cushy on the shoulders and that’s perfect when you carry a heavier child. When you want to use a thick wrap for a newborn, i recommend the front wrap cross carry tied off with a twist under baby’s bum. So the fabric won’t go under baby’s legs. When your baby has clothing size 62 you can use the normal front wrap cross carry.
